We bring the pieces together

PR puzzle piecesStrategic public relations is a leap beyond news releases and placements. It has to be.

In today’s world, 140 little characters can bruise or thrust a brand on life support within minutes. Leveraging real-time strategic public relations tactics, PR pros are expected to do some heavy lifting: They must have the muscle to uplift and hold reputations, capture customers’ attention, create and brand content, drive and measure traffic, generate leads that convert to sales and amplify the client’s voice with one hand, and actively engage those audiences on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Pinterest with the other.

Strategic public relations professionals must play the digital PR game without breaking a sweat. Their demands match any team’s: Players must be agile, with quick hands and feet. In a perfect world, they can play offense as expertly as defense.

social media icon-question markSocial media has revolutionized and democratized the relationship between brands and consumers. It has created rock stars and ruined reputations. Planned and executed well, social media can drive traffic to your door, help your consumers become more interactive and intimate with your brand, and build or boost your company’s reputation.

Before posting content, it’s critical to conduct research and develop a strategy to locate your audience online. Are they in Google+ hangouts, on X, Facebook, Instagram, or all of the above? Next, you must provide them with valuable information, inspire them to share information about you with their friends and followers, and genuinely engage them in conversations, rather than post and run.

Social media executions take time, and time is money. Your communication must be strategic, consistent, and consistently welcomed, or you’re wasting your time—no matter where you’re hanging out.

cookie cutterThere is no cookie cutter communications strategy. But effective strategy, particularly one that incorporates content marketing, relies on solid journalistic skills: great research, valuable information and exceptional storytelling.

There no longer is a captive audience waiting to consume and obey the commercials’ commands. They’re now in constant motion, and they don’t want to spend any time listening or watching branded messages. In fact, they’d rather pay cash to avoid it.

But consumers will slow down, maybe even stop ever so briefly to consume articles, white papers, entertainment, tips or insights that enhance some aspect of their personal or professional lives. The trick is to know what resonates, and strike that chord. To do that, you must do your homework.
